Every year, politicians, business and media personalities, celebrities, and sports fans come together to watch the fast-paced wall ball games. In 2015 local leaders from Brooklyn and the Bronx began putting the ball to the wall at MatchPoint NYC in the Johnny Ray Memorial Pro Wall Ball Tournament. Notes Dmitry Druzhinsky: the intra-city rivalry is promoted by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. to get inner-city and under-served kids engaged in physical activity while helping the U.S. Wall Ball Association’s education, anti-violence and anti-obesity initiatives. The competition first took place in 2012 to celebrate the life of Jonathan Ray, the late brother of the USWA CEO and inspiration for the association’s founding. Dmitry is honored at the opportunity to provide support to organizations promoting a healthy lifestyle in New York.
Beach-goers smacking a bald tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties back in the 1930s drove the New York Parks Department to build community handball courts in city parks, notes the U.S. Wall Ball Association. These days, the game has gone pro- Wall Ball is played at fitness centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, Brooklyn’s premier health and fitness facility, recently hosted New York politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament. Billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” this large annual contest raises awareness of public health and youth empowerment and awards the winning team with a trophy and a full year of bragging rights.
With over three acres of high-class amenities, including nine indoor tennis courts, MatchPoint NYC is Brooklyn’s largest tennis complex, and ranks as the second largest in the New York region. Since opening in Coney Island in 2013, the location has played host to many charity events attended by politicians, Wall Street elites, sports icons and celebrities working to raise millions of dollars for a range of non-profit groups. Much of this is because of MatchPoint NYC co-founder Dmitry Druzhinsky, who has learned to meld his dedication to philanthropy with his successful real estate developments.
